Basic Definition
Polyethylene, abbreviated as PE, is the simplest thermoplastic polymer made by polymerizing ethylene monomers. It belongs to the polyolefin family and is one of the most widely used plastics worldwide due to its low cost, lightweight and outstanding processability.
Main Classifications & Features
(1) LDPE – Low-Density Polyethylene
- Low crystallinity, soft and flexible, slightly transparent
- Excellent toughness at low temperatures, good moisture barrier
- Common uses: plastic wrap, squeeze bottles, disposable bags, coating film
(2) HDPE – High-Density Polyethylene
- High density, rigid, hard, opaque, high tensile strength
- Resistant to chemicals, oil and high temperature
- Common uses: plastic buckets, water pipes, fuel tanks, shopping bags, cutting boards
(3) LLDPE – Linear Low-Density Polyethylene
- Linear molecular structure, higher impact resistance than LDPE
- Good anti-tear performance, blendable with other PE grades
- Common uses: stretch wrap film, agricultural mulch film, flexible containers
(4) UHMWPE – Ultra-High-Molecular-Weight Polyethylene
- Extremely long molecular chains, ultra-high wear resistance and self-lubrication
- Shock-absorbent, anti-corrosion, biocompatible
- Common uses: mechanical sliding parts, artificial joint components, mining lining plates
Core Advantages of PE Material
- Light weight with low density, floats in water
- Excellent water and moisture resistance, no water absorption
- Inert to most acids, alkalis and organic solvents
- Non-toxic and odorless, food-safe for food packaging
- Good low-temperature resistance; does not crack under freezing conditions
- Easy to extrude, injection mold, blow mold and thermoform
- Fully recyclable, marked with recycling symbol number 2 (HDPE) / 4 (LDPE)
Disadvantages
- Low heat resistance: softens easily above 80–120°C, cannot withstand high-temperature sterilization
- Poor UV resistance; will crack and turn brittle under long-term sunlight without UV stabilizers
- Low surface polarity, hard to print or glue without surface treatment
- Susceptible to slow creep under long-term constant load

Brief Chemical Property Note
PE consists only of carbon and hydrogen atoms, with no polar functional groups in its molecular chain. This chemical inertness gives it strong corrosion resistance but also leads to weak adhesion and printing difficulty.
