Definition & Anti-corrosion Mechanism
Stainless steel is an iron-based alloy containing a minimum of 10.5% chromium and a maximum 1.2% carbon.
Anti-rust principle:
Chromium reacts with oxygen to form an ultra-thin, dense chromium oxide passive film (2–3 nm) on the surface. This layer blocks water, oxygen, and acids to prevent iron oxidation. If scratched or worn off, the film can self-repair with oxygen exposure, a unique feature carbon steel lacks.
Additional alloy elements (nickel, molybdenum, nitrogen, and manganese) further boost corrosion resistance, ductility, and mechanical strength.
